ship burial
Nautical funeral rite
Ship burial is an ancient funeral practice in which a deceased person—typically of high status—is interred in or under a ship or boat.
The vessel served as a grave chamber, often filled with weapons, treasures, and provisions for the afterlife.
Associated especially with Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, ship burials reflected beliefs about journeys to the realm of the dead.
The Sutton Hoo excavation in England uncovered the most famous example.
