V-1 rocket

German revenge weapon

The V-1 was a German flying bomb used in World War II, an early cruise missile powered by a pulse-jet engine.

Launched primarily against London and Antwerp in 1944–45, it carried a warhead that detonated on impact.

The distinctive buzzing sound earned it the nickname "buzz bomb" or "doodlebug." The V stood for *Vergeltungswaffe* (vengeance weapon).
