Typhoon-class

Largest nuclear submarines

Typhoon-class designates Soviet nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, the largest submarines ever built.

Constructed during the Cold War, these vessels carried multiple nuclear warheads and were designed to survive a first strike and retaliate.

The class name comes from NATO designation; the Soviets called them Akula (shark).

The Typhoon-class submarine in "The Hunt for Red October" captured Cold War anxieties.
