The Firebird

Mythical flaming bird

The Firebird is a ballet by Igor Stravinsky, premiered in 1910—his first major success and a landmark of 20th-century music.

The work draws on Russian folklore about a magical bird with glowing plumage whose feather brings both protection and peril.

The term also refers to the orchestral suite Stravinsky extracted from the ballet, a concert-hall staple: The orchestra opened with The Firebird.
