Stone of Destiny
Scottish crowning seat
The Stone of Destiny is a block of sandstone historically used in the coronation of Scottish and later British monarchs.
Kings were traditionally crowned while seated above it, the stone symbolizing legitimate sovereignty.
Also called the Stone of Scone, it was kept at Scone Abbey in Scotland until Edward I seized it in 1296 and moved it to Westminster Abbey.
It was returned to Scotland in 1996 and remains central to British coronation ceremonies.
