Star and Crescent
Ottoman Empire symbol
The star and crescent is a symbol consisting of a crescent moon with a star positioned nearby, most commonly associated with Islam and appearing on the flags of several Muslim-majority nations including Turkey and Pakistan.
The symbol predates Islam, having been used in ancient Mesopotamia and later by the Byzantine Empire, but became linked to Islam through the Ottoman Empire.
The mosque was topped with a golden star and crescent.
