Papal audience venue
St.
Peter's Square is the large public plaza in Vatican City, fronting St.
Peter's Basilica.
Designed by Bernini in the 17th century, it features a massive oval colonnade embracing the space where crowds gather for papal addresses and ceremonies: Thousands filled St. Peter's Square for the Easter blessing.
The piazza is among the world's most recognizable public spaces.
