Speak and Spell
Talking learning device
Speak and Spell is a handheld electronic learning toy introduced by Texas Instruments in 1979, designed to help children learn spelling through synthesized speech.
The device would pronounce a word and the child would type it on a membrane keyboard.
Its robotic voice became iconic in 1980s childhood and appeared in pop culture, notably in the film *E.T.* The name is sometimes used generically for similar educational electronics.
