reading primer
First literacy text
A reading primer is an introductory textbook for teaching children to read, typically featuring simple words, short sentences, and illustrations.
The term evokes mid-20th-century schoolbooks like the Dick and Jane series: She learned to read from an old primer her grandmother kept.
By extension, any basic introductory text on a subject may be called a primer.
