Sokoto Caliphate

West African empire

The Sokoto Caliphate was an Islamic state in West Africa, founded in 1804 after Usman dan Fodio's jihad against the Hausa kingdoms.

It became one of the largest states in 19th-century Africa, covering much of what is now northern Nigeria.

The caliphate fell to British conquest in 1903, though its religious and political legacy persists in the region's traditional emirate structures.
