Sinterklaas

Netherlands gift-bringer

Sinterklaas is a Dutch folk figure who brings gifts to children on December 5th or 6th.

He appears as an elderly man in bishop's robes, arriving by steamboat from Spain with his helpers.

The Dutch brought Sinterklaas to America, where he evolved into Santa Claus—though in the Netherlands, the two remain distinct traditions.
