the Grinch
Whoville's Christmas thief
The Grinch is the main character of Dr.
Seuss's 1966 story *How the Grinch Stole Christmas!*—a bitter, green creature who despises the holiday cheer of the Whos in Whoville.
As a common noun, a grinch is someone who spoils others' fun, especially around the holidays: Don't be such a Grinch about the office party.
