Shrapnel

British ordnance inventor

Shrapnel is fragments from an exploding bomb, shell, or other munition.

Originally it referred to a specific type of artillery shell filled with metal balls, designed to scatter on detonation.

Now the term covers any flying debris from an explosion: She was hit by shrapnel from the IED.

Figuratively, shrapnel can mean scattered remnants or fallout from any destructive event.
