Bob Cratchit

Bob Cratchit is a fictional character from Charles Dickens's *A Christmas Carol* (1843)—the underpaid, overworked clerk to the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge.

His name has become shorthand for a long-suffering employee enduring poor conditions with quiet dignity: Every office has its Bob Cratchit, shivering by the radiator while the boss cranks up the AC.
