Romanies

Nomadic European travelers

Romanies is the plural of Romany, referring to members of the Romani people—an ethnic group with origins in South Asia who have lived throughout Europe and the Americas for centuries.

Also spelled Romanis.

The term is preferred in formal contexts over the older *Gypsy*, which some consider offensive: The Romanies maintained their distinct cultural traditions despite centuries of persecution.
