Roman eagle
Imperial military emblem
The Roman eagle, or aquila, was the sacred standard carried by Roman legions—a bronze or gold eagle mounted on a pole.
Losing the eagle in battle brought profound disgrace; recovering one brought glory.
The image became a symbol of imperial Roman power and military might, later adopted by empires claiming Roman heritage: The captured Roman eagle was paraded through enemy streets.
