Pool

Common British surname

Pool has two distinct sources in English.

One gives us a small body of still water—a pond, a puddle, or an artificial basin for swimming: The kids splashed in the pool.

The other gives us a shared collection of resources or funds: a car pool, a talent pool, a pool of investors.

To pool resources is to combine them for common use.

Pool is also a category of billiards games played on a table with pockets, probably from the betting pool that accompanied gambling versions.
