Pond

Common English surname

A pond is a body of still water smaller than a lake, often shallow enough for sunlight to reach the bottom and support rooted plants throughout.

The distinction from lake is imprecise—generally ponds are small enough to lack significant wave action.

The children caught frogs at the pond.

The pond sometimes refers playfully to the Atlantic Ocean, especially in British usage: Our friends across the pond.
