Moonies

Mass wedding participants

Moonies is informal, often dismissive slang for members of the Unification Church, founded by Korean religious leader Sun Myung Moon in the 1950s.

The movement gained notoriety in the 1970s and 1980s for mass weddings and aggressive recruitment.

Church members consider the term derogatory. (Lowercase moonies has the same meaning.)
