Kafkaesque
Menacingly, pointlessly complex
Kafkaesque describes situations resembling the nightmarish, absurdist fiction of Franz Kafka—characterized by bewildering bureaucracy, surreal logic, and individuals trapped in systems beyond their comprehension or control.
The appeals process was Kafkaesque: each denial cited a different rule, and no one could explain how to satisfy them all.
The word evokes not just frustration but existential dread in the face of impersonal, irrational authority. (Lowercase kafkaesque is a variant.)
