The Trial

Courtroom ordeal novel

*The Trial* is Franz Kafka's 1925 novel about a man arrested and prosecuted by an inaccessible, inscrutable authority for a crime never specified.

The book has become shorthand for bewildering encounters with impenetrable bureaucracy or legal systems: Getting my license renewed was like something out of The Trial.

The adjective Kafkaesque derives partly from this work.
