Ishihara test

Dotted number plates

The Ishihara test is a color vision assessment using plates of colored dots with numbers or patterns hidden within them.

People with normal color vision see the embedded figures; those with red-green color blindness cannot distinguish them from the surrounding dots.

Named for its Japanese inventor, the test is standard in medical and occupational screenings: He failed the Ishihara test and couldn't become a pilot.
