color plates
Book's vivid pages
Color plates are printed illustrations, typically on glossy paper, inserted into books or publications.
Before affordable color printing, books were printed in black and white with color images produced separately and bound in: The field guide includes thirty-two color plates of North American birds.
The term persists even as color printing has become standard.
