Gore-Tex

Hiker's jacket lining

Gore-Tex is a trademarked waterproof, breathable fabric used in outdoor clothing and gear.

The material features a membrane with microscopic pores—too small for water droplets to penetrate but large enough for water vapor to escape, keeping the wearer dry from both rain and sweat: I won't hike without my Gore-Tex shell.

The name has become nearly generic for high-performance waterproof fabrics. (Sometimes written informally as gore-tex.)
