Freedom Ride

Interstate bus protest

A Freedom Ride was one of the 1961 bus trips through the American South in which Black and white activists rode together to challenge segregated interstate travel facilities.

The riders faced violent attacks from white mobs, particularly in Alabama, forcing federal intervention.

The Freedom Rides became a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement: My grandfather was beaten on a Freedom Ride in Anniston. (Lowercase freedom ride refers to similar protests generally.)
