Fire
Heat and light
Fire is the visible result of combustion—flames, heat, and light produced when something burns.
A fire can be controlled (campfire, fireplace) or destructive (house fire, wildfire).
To fire a gun is to discharge it; to fire an employee is to terminate them.
Fire also means to ignite enthusiasm: The speech fired up the crowd.
Gunfire, firing squad, and ceasefire all derive from the weapon sense.
Under fire means receiving criticism or attack.
