Fidelio

Beethoven's sole opera

Fidelio is Beethoven's only opera, first performed in 1805.

The title is the male name assumed by Leonore, who disguises herself as a prison guard to rescue her husband from political imprisonment.

The name derives from Latin for "faithful one," fitting the opera's themes of marital devotion and justice.
