Continental Europe

Across the Channel

Continental Europe is the mainland portion of Europe, excluding the British Isles and other islands.

The term is used primarily from a British perspective, where the Continent implies crossing the English Channel: We're spending August on the Continent.

Continental breakfast, continental philosophy, and similar phrases reflect traditions associated with mainland European countries rather than Britain.
