overseas territories
Far-flung dependencies
Overseas territories are regions that belong to a country but are geographically separate from it, usually remnants of colonial empires.
Britain has fourteen, including Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands; France has several, including Martinique and French Guiana.
They typically have some local self-governance while remaining under the sovereignty of the parent nation: Puerto Rico is a U.S. overseas territory.
