Cisalpine Gaul
Rome's northern frontier
Cisalpine Gaul was the Roman name for the region of northern Italy between the Alps and the Apennines, occupied by Gallic (Celtic) tribes before Roman conquest.
The name means "Gaul on this side of the Alps"—from Rome's perspective.
The region included the fertile Po Valley and major cities like Milan and Bologna.
It was formally incorporated into Italy proper in 42 BCE.
