Caesarean section

Abdominal birth operation

A Caesarean section, more commonly called a C-section, is a way to deliver a baby by cutting into the mother’s abdomen instead of through the birth canal.

This may be necessary if there is a danger to the mother or baby, or if the mother has had a previous Caesarean section.

The name probably derives from a Roman law that required pregnant women who died to be cut open so that the baby might be saved.
