Jesus of Nazareth
Christian faith's founder
Jesus of Nazareth was a Jewish preacher in first-century Palestine whose life and teachings became the foundation of Christianity.
Christians believe he was the Son of God, the promised Messiah, crucified and resurrected.
His name in Hebrew means "savior," which his followers take literally.
The historical figure and the object of religious devotion are inseparable in most usage: Jesus of Nazareth walked among the poor.
The name appears in oaths and exclamations—*Jesus!*, *Jesus Christ!*—ranging from genuine invocation to casual profanity. (See also Jesus, Christ.)
