BOLD signal

fMRI's measured response

BOLD signal stands for blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal, the measurement used in functional MRI brain imaging.

When neurons fire, they consume oxygen, triggering increased blood flow to that region.

The BOLD signal detects this change in oxygenated versus deoxygenated blood, allowing researchers to infer which brain areas are active during specific tasks: The BOLD signal showed increased activity in the visual cortex.
