Athene

Greek wisdom deity

Athene is the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, and crafts—called Minerva by the Romans.

She sprang fully armed from Zeus's head and served as patron deity of Athens, which bears her name.

The Parthenon was her temple.

Athene appears in scientific names for owls, her sacred bird: the genus *Athene* includes burrowing owls and little owls.
