Arawaks

Pre-Columbian island people

The Arawaks are indigenous peoples of the Caribbean and South America, among the first to encounter Columbus in 1492.

They inhabited the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and parts of coastal South America.

Arawak also refers to their language family.

The term sometimes distinguishes them from the more warlike Caribs, though this distinction reflects European colonial narratives.
