woodwasp

Tree-drilling insect

A woodwasp is a large wasp-like insect whose larvae bore into wood, particularly of coniferous trees.

Despite their intimidating appearance and the females' long, needle-like ovipositor used to drill into bark and deposit eggs, woodwasps do not sting humans.

They are also called horntails because of the spine-like projection at the end of their abdomen.

The forester identified woodwasp damage in the dying pines.
