horntail

Timber-boring wasp

A horntail is a large wood-boring wasp, named for the pointed projection at the end of its abdomen.

Despite their alarming appearance, horntails don't sting—the horn is an ovipositor used to drill into wood and deposit eggs.

Their larvae tunnel through trees for years before emerging as adults.
