wood burning

Wood burning is the craft of decorating wood surfaces by scorching designs into them with a heated metal point, also called pyrography.

The term also describes the practice of heating homes with wood-burning stoves or fireplaces: Many rural homes still rely on wood burning for heat.

As a modifier, it describes equipment designed for this purpose: a wood-burning stove, a wood-burning fireplace insert.
