wist

Knew, once said

Wist is the past tense of wit in its archaic sense of "to know." It appears almost exclusively in older literature: He wist not what to say.

The word survives mainly in the phrase to wit, meaning "namely" or "that is to say," and in the adjective wistful, though wistful has drifted toward longing rather than knowing.
