wind tower

Electricity from gusts

A wind tower is a traditional architectural feature, common in Middle Eastern and Persian buildings, designed to catch and channel breezes into interior spaces for natural cooling.

The tower rises above the roofline to capture wind at higher elevations, directing airflow downward into rooms below.

Also called a windcatcher or, in Persian, a badgir.

The term also applies to modern structures that support wind turbines for electricity generation.
