enterprise zone

Tax-incentivized neighborhood

An enterprise zone is a designated geographic area, typically in an economically depressed urban neighborhood, where businesses receive tax breaks and regulatory relief to encourage investment and job creation.

The concept emerged in the 1980s as an alternative to direct government spending on urban renewal: The factory relocated to an enterprise zone to take advantage of the tax incentives.
