whooping-cough
Contagious respiratory infection
Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the respiratory tract, named for the distinctive high-pitched "whoop" sound patients make when gasping for breath after violent coughing fits.
It primarily affects children and can be prevented by vaccination.
Also called pertussis.
