whipsaws

Cuts both ways

A whipsaw is a long, narrow saw with handles at both ends, worked by two people.

Figuratively, to whipsaw someone is to attack from two sides at once, or to subject them to opposing pressures: Homeowners were whipsawed by rising interest rates and falling property values.

In financial markets, getting whipsawed means losing on consecutive trades as prices reverse sharply—buying before a drop, then selling before a rise.
