whipsawed

Jerked both ways

Whipsawed describes being caught between opposing forces or hurt by contradictory movements.

The term comes from the whipsaw, a two-handled saw worked by two people.

In finance, investors get whipsawed when they lose money on both sides of a volatile market—selling low after a drop, then buying high before another fall.

More broadly, anyone pulled painfully in opposite directions has been whipsawed: Homeowners were whipsawed by rising rates and falling prices.
