wax seals
Envelope authentication marks
Wax seals are decorative closures made by dripping melted wax onto an envelope, document, or package and pressing a design into it before it hardens.
Historically they authenticated letters and legal documents, with the impression from a signet ring or stamp identifying the sender.
Though largely obsolete for security purposes, wax seals persist in formal invitations, wedding stationery, and craft projects where they add an air of elegance or old-world authenticity.
She stamped each invitation with a custom wax seal.
