water skipper

Surface tension walker

A water skipper is a small insect that walks or skates across the surface of ponds and streams, supported by surface tension.

Also called water strider or pond skater.

The long, splayed legs distribute weight so the insect dimples but doesn't break the water's surface: We watched water skippers dart across the creek.
