Water closets is the plural of water closet, a somewhat formal or dated term for a toilet or a small room containing one.
The term distinguished flush toilets from outhouses and chamber pots when indoor plumbing was novel.
It survives mainly in the abbreviation WC, still seen on restroom signs in Europe and elsewhere: The WC is down the hall on your left.
