flush toilets

Water-powered waste removers

Flush toilets are toilets that use water to carry waste through a drain into a sewer or septic system.

The flush mechanism—typically a lever or button—releases water from a tank, clearing the bowl.

They became standard in developed countries during the 20th century, replacing outhouses and chamber pots: The cabin had no flush toilets, just a pit latrine out back.
