night soil

Collected latrine contents

Night soil is human feces collected from cesspools, outhouses, and chamber pots, historically used as fertilizer.

Before modern sewage systems, workers called night soil men collected waste after dark and transported it to farms.

The term is now mainly historical, though the practice continues in some parts of the world.

The fields were fertilized with night soil.
