water body

Natural liquid accumulation

A water body is any distinct accumulation of water on or beneath Earth's surface—lakes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, wetlands, oceans, or groundwater formations.

The term appears most often in scientific, regulatory, and environmental contexts: The EPA monitors water bodies for contamination.

Also written as one word: waterbody.
